Hobbies are one of those things that don't have to make sense to anyone except you, but running 700 miles to make a 28-second video on your fitness app is just ridiculous.
It took Duncan McCabe ten months to create this:
He made the video by tracking his runs with the Strava map app, calculating the routes he needed to run to create the animation.
Some of the routes were over six miles, but altogether the animation added up to over 700 miles.
'If I have a long-term vision, I'm willing to work for a very long time,' said McCabe. 'Each piece of art is a frame, and if you combine them, you can turn frames into motion.'
'The inspiration for that broadly comes from Strava art … I have a lot of respect for the stuff that has come before me.'
However, McCabe credits the idea for making an animation out of his art to his wife, Andrea Morales. She suggested he create an animation, flip-book style.
'The lightbulb went on,' he said. 'I could visualize it in my head.'
McCabe used PowerPoint to map out his runs so that he could see the movements from slide to slide.
'You can make individual maps in Strava for these types of things, but I'm talking about a series of maps, and PowerPoint ended up being more useful,' he said. 'You get a little less accuracy, but it's easier for visualization.'
And while the animation is impressive, it's not as physically impressive as the London artist and cyclist who drew this tracking his route:
Seriously, who are these people and where do they find the time for this?
