A woman in Belgium has been banned from visiting the Antwerp Zoo because of her love "affair" with a male chimpanzee. ๐ฌ
I swear, it's not as weird as you'd think...
Adie Timmermans has been visiting the chimp, Chita, every week for four years and has developed a close bond with the animal.
"I love that animal and he loves me," she told ATV (a regional news channel) in a tearful interview, according to Ladbible, "We're having an affair, I'll just say."
So, it turns out a love affair with another species isn't only mentally and emotionally harmful for a human involved. The zoo is concerned about how Chita is fitting in with the other chimps while being involved with Adie (a human woman).
They told Adie that, "an animal that is too focused on people is less respected by its peers. We want Chita to be a chimpanzee as much as possible."
A spokesperson said, "When Chita is constantly busy with visitors, the other monkeys ignore him and don't consider him part of the group, even though that is important. He then sits on his own outside of visiting hours."
You see? The zoo isn't trying to stand in the way of love. They just don't want Chita to be emotionally scarred and treated like an outsider by his own pack.
Chita arrived at the zoo 30 years ago, after being someone's pet. He had to learn chimpanzee behavior from the other chimps at the zoo but his interest in humans didn't go away.
But it seems like this interest went a little too far... which led to Adie being banned from visiting the zoo until further notice.
