A Texas woman was reunited this year with the son she gave up for adoption in 1975 when she was only 15 years old.
Brenda Van Sickle said she saw her son for about 15 minutes after giving birth, but had decided to give him up for adoption to a family that could better provide for him.
"It was all I could do to sign those papers and walk out the door and leave him," she said in an interview with NBC. "It was really hard."
Van Sickle went on to get married, worked in broadcast journalism, and now works in the Arlington Police Department in their public information office.
Van Sickle had attempted to previously track down her son but only had his birthdate and location.
This year, that son – now a New Orleans man named Wes Fenner – called her at work and introduced himself.
"It was an awkward first conversation," said Fenner, who had been trying to find his mom for years but had previously gotten cold feet. "She was not expecting a phone call at work saying, 'Hi, did you put a child up for adoption in 1975?' That was an odd phone call."
The two met in a hotel parking lot for a reunion where they hugged, cried, and talked.
"I'm not a huge crier," said Fenner. "But it was definitely one of those moments. It was kind of like looking at myself, a slightly older version of myself, in the mirror."
"I wiped away his tears and he wiped away mine," said Van Sickle.
The two have stayed in touch – Van Sickle has even met her 9-year-old grandson – and have learned they have quite a bit in common.
"You know you wonder about nature versus nurture," Van Sickle said. "We send each other song lyrics back and forth and he listens to the same music I do. We like the same movies. We have the same snarky sense of humor. I'm going, 'Yeah, this is my kid.'"
