We are ruled by fools

Every year, it seems that William F. Buckley's aphorism grows more timely and more accurate than the year before. "I would rather be governed," Buckley said, "by the first 2,000 people listed in the Boston telephone directory than by the faculty of Harvard University."

On the surface, it sounds like it must be hyperbole. It has to be a joke intended to dig at the wisdom and practicality of elites, rather than an actual preference of the author. And that's what I used to believe myself. But I don't anymore. I don't know how anyone who follows the actions and conduct of our governing rulers could think it's a joke. No, the joke - the bad joke - is clearer every day.

Let's even, for the sake of skipping the easy lay-ups, set the entire existence of Vice President Kamala Harris to the side. No sense in beating the dead horse that is the staggering, farcical cluelessness she exudes persistently. Just ignore Harris completely and look around.

A college girl was murdered by an illegal immigrant from Venezuela who entered the country in 2022, under the lax border policies of President Joe Biden. The killer, Jose Ibarra, incapacitated the girl with blunt force trauma and then disfigured her skull. This was the response from the President's press secretary:

That's not just politics. It's idiotic. As was this from the president himself:

Why is the current president asking the former (powerless) president to secure the border? This isn't politics. This is just dumb. And it's not just federal officials. Here's the mayor of the town where it all happened.

To realize how breathtakingly ignorant this kind of a statement is, let's circle back to Mayor Girtz after taking stock of a separate but equally foolish comment. This one made by one of the nine-most esteemed jurists in the country:

You don't have to be anything close to a gun enthusiast to know how facepalm-worthy a comment like that is. But even if you don't, you would at least know better than to start opining on the topic without doing even a preliminary five-second Google search. But that's a common sense that apparently evades one of the great legal minds of our era?

But since Justice Kagan broached the topic of guns, let's use that and return to Mayor Girtz from earlier. No one on the left claims that the mere existence of a gun increases crime. Their claim is that guns are utilized in the commission of crimes at an alarming rate and thus should be regulated more strictly than what they are currently.

Are we to the point where we can't see logical inconsistency in not making the same observation about illegal immigration? It's not that the mere existence of illegal immigrants increases crime (although unlawful crossing of the border was once considered, you know, law-breaking). It's that illegal immigrants are committing crime at an alarming rate and thus should be regulated more strictly than what they are currently.

And no, I'm not one-sided about this. It astounds me that the only viable alternative to that festival of stupidity is, well, this:

I said it last week and I'll say it again: Over-politicization has ruined so much and will, in time, ruin everything about our way of life. If there was any question about what it has done to our intellects, just pause long enough to listen to what those who rule us are saying.

Only God can help us now.
