Alabama mom scores free donuts for a year after giving birth in Krispy Kreme parking lot during snowstorm

Feb 5, 2025

I've heard of the "free birthing" movement among hippie moms, but I think it's about time to start the "free-food birthing" trend for the less crunchy among us. What better way to start it off than with a year's supply of Krispy Kreme donuts?

That's exactly what new mom Sha'Nya Bennett received after giving birth during a historic snowstorm in south Alabama last month, but it definitely wasn't part of her birth plan.

Bennett, her partner Keon Mitchell, and their 4-year-old son were on their way to the Flowers Hospital in Dothan, Alabama. However, the icy road conditions prevented them from getting there in time.

When they were only about a mile away from the hospital, Bennett let Keon know that she could feel the baby's head and she wasn't going to make it. Mitchell pulled over at the first opportunity, into the parking lot of a Krispy Kreme that was closed due to the snow. Once parked, the dad quickly assisted mom in delivering their newborn son.

Mitchell said of the moment,

And when he came out she just told me to grab him and I grabbed him until the paramedics got there.

Here's a local news segment:

Within only a few minutes, the paramedics arrived to take mom and baby to the hospital. Both mom and baby made it through the whirlwind delivery with no complications and are now at home.

Just look at that sweet face!

Upon learning about the role their parking lot played in the birth story, the general manager at Krispy Kreme reached out to the family to offer to host the baby's first birthday party at the franchise and give the family free donuts for a year.

I'm sure the couple didn't love giving birth in a parking lot during a snowstorm, but free donuts might just make up for the inconvenience.

The manager told AL.com,

My first thought was, we have seen it all. I'm telling you, everything happens in the Krispy Kreme parking lot on a scale from small to grand. I was like well that's just the icing on the doughnut right there.

The couple named their son Dallas, but their family encouraged them to give him a donut-y middle name like Glaze, to which the dad replied,

We'll have to talk about that.

I have a feeling they're not going to talk about it.
