I've said it before, and I'll say it again: HOAs are evil.
Now an Arizona HOA in Goodyear, Arizona, is fining a homeowner $100 per month for offering his neighborhood free cold water.
David Martin has been offering free water bottles to his neighbors since 2020 to help with the heat. He leaves the waters outside his home with a sign telling people to help themselves.
But this year, FS Residential, the management company that oversees the Canyon Trails' HOA, decided that Martin's good will wasn't a good look for the neighborhood, and they started fining him $50 a month, which increased to $100 per month for the last four months.
'I don't feel like I'm doing a disservice to the HOA, to the community, or my family,' Martin said. 'It baffles my brain and makes it work too hard to figure it out.'
FS Residential released a statement saying,
The Association does not object to a resident providing free water bottles to the community; however, the community's rules do not allow a resident to advertise water bottle distribution from a portable ice chest, located next to their garage that is visible from neighboring property.
The resident decided to place additional signage in his front yard further advertising water bottle distribution, which violates the community's rules. The Association is hopeful that a mutually agreeable resolution remains achievable.
Martin says that he refuses to pay the fine or stop serving his community with free waters.
Neighbors who have taken advantage of the free water have even offered to pay Martin's fines, but he's refused the money.
'You can donate water. You can donate money that will go to water,' David said.
