Multiple people are feared dead after a reported shooting at a 4th of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois, on Monday.
Witnesses say crowds fled the sound of gunfire, and others saw at least five bloodied people lying on the ground and another under a blanket, according to the Chicago Sun Times.
Initial reports say that 9 people were shot. It is unknown how many fatalities there are at this time.
Other initial stories said the shooter may have been firing from a rooftop, although this has not been confirmed. Photos are starting to emerge of people being treated for injuries on the sidewalk.
According to media reports, a total of 9 people have been killed and 57 shot within the city limits of Chicago itself since the holiday weekend started.
Chicago has one of the strictest set of gun control laws in the nation.
While violence has been escalating in the city in recent years, crime is now spilling into wealthier neighborhoods. Last month, a police officer was approached by a random man who jumped out of his car wielding an axe.
