Anthony Stevens, a British conservative politician out of Northampton, was arrested for hate speech for retweeting a video of police confiscating the Bible of a street preacher.
The tweet seems to have disappeared, but here's the video in question.
The man being arrested in the video was Oluwole Ilesanmi, who was street preaching in Southgate, London, in 2019.
Ilesanmi won a wrongful arrest lawsuit awarding him £2,500 for this video's events. However, he was re-arrested for saying "All Muslims will go to hell." He received two-years probation and a £920 fine for that.
A leftist councillor out of Northampton, and political opponent of Stevens, saw the retweet regarding Ilesanmi and alerted the authorities.
Police arrested Stevens and physically searched him at his home in front of his wife and daughter.
They also questioned him about a tweet supporting free speech and calling for people to sign a petition for the reinstatement of fellow Councillor King Lawal.
Lawal was suspended from the Conservative party after posting another tweet that seems to have disappeared, which reportedly read:
When did Pride become a thing to celebrate. Because of Pride Satan fell as an arch Angel. Pride is not a virtue but a Sin. Those who have Pride should Repent of their sins and return to Jesus Christ. He can save you. #PrideMonth #Pride23 #PrideParade.
Lawal decried Stevens's arrest.
In response to questions about its actions, the Northampton Police just said,
'On August 2, Northamptonshire Police received a report of a hate crime regarding posts made on social media.
'In response, a 50-year-old man was arrested on the morning of August 7 on suspicion of distributing written material to stir up racial hatred. He has been released on bail pending further enquiries.
'As this is a live investigation, the Force is unable to comment further.'
How Orwellian is that?
We received a report of a hate crime regarding posts made on social media.
Literally none of these crimes were anything but words being either said or written. They were nothing but ideas: Christian ideas, of course, because those are the most dangerous kind.
As for Stevens, he's back on Twitter decrying the police state of Britain and the death of free speech in the nation.
