Wow, never thought I'd see more taxes levied on the people of California โ€” and taxes on guns and ammo?! I just can't believe it!

They're DOUBLING taxes on firearms and ammo!

Didn't we tell you people to get the heck out of there?

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a law Tuesday that will double the taxes on guns and ammunition, with the new revenue going to safety initiatives.

The federal government collects excise taxes on purchases of firearms and ammunition at either 10% or 11%. The new law adds another 11% excise tax, meaning that Golden State residents can indirectly pay as much as 22%.

Newsom said that he saw the tax increase as a "pretty modest investment" in gun violence prevention and believes it will help toward "reducing those costs ultimately."

"The carnage, it's too much. We can't normalize it, we can't accept it," Newsom said. "This is a small price to pay."

California is now the only state in the U.S. that has a special tax on gun purchases.

"A pretty modest investment," they said. "A small price to pay."

Californians, you are now paying 11% more than the rest of us to purchase firearms and ammo. When will you come to terms with the fact that driving to Nevada, Arizona, or even Idaho is not worth your weekend drive to pick up ammo or a new Glock? It's time to get the heck outta California for good, and stop coming back.

Not only that, but this won't stop violence. Criminals aren't buying guns and ammo at their local FFL shop. They're getting bucketfuls of cheap ammo flooding over the border or they're just pawning it off their friends. The only people that will be hurt are families that can't afford to buy a small arsenal to defend themselves against criminals.

More on this new tax:

The tax does not apply to police officers or to businesses that sell less than $5,000 worth of guns or ammo over a three-month period. The tax is projected to generate $159 million per year, with the money going to the California Violence Intervention and Prevention Grant Program and the State Department of Education.

The California Violence Intervention and Prevention Grant Program runs initiatives that target young people in gangs and help them with life-coaching. The State Department of Education would use the money to improve security at schools and run after-school programs for at-risk students.

Yeah, I'm sure all that money will go just where it's supposed to. And these programs, I bet they'll work out just as intended.

Sugar coat this all you want, California, it's still just a giant tax increase on people's fundamental rights.
