This could only happen in Japan: Robot wolves vs. real-life bears
· Oct 3, 2023 · NottheBee.com

Bear attacks have been on the rise in Japan, so the Japanese solved the problem in the most Japanese way possible: They built autonomous robot wolves to roam the perimeters of farms and cities scaring away bears and other animals.

Watch it in action:

We reported briefly on this terrifying creation three years ago, but now we have video and it's so much worse.

Recently, bears have been wandering into cities and attacking people. One bear attack in May ended with a fisherman dead.

Another incident in the city of Sapporo ended with four people mauled before the bear was put down.

While Japan's human population is aging and shrinking, the bear population is soaring. The government estimates there are around 12,000 brown bears, and 10,000 black bears, so it's no surprise bear sightings are on the rise.

The robot wolves designed to protect farms are now being used by shrinking towns to try to keep the bears at bay.

The robots were first used in Takikawa City in 2020 and worked so well that several other local governments have ordered the robotic sentinels to patrol their cities.

Should the bears figure out that the robots really aren't all that dangerous, remember that bear meat is considered a delicacy in Japan.

They could always open hunting for a couple of seasons and thin out the population.
