The riots started after 17-year-old Algerian-French teen Nael M. (kinda weird that his full name isn't being given, eh?) was killed by police during a traffic stop Tuesday in the Paris suburb of Nanterre.

Multiple French accounts on Twitter are reporting that this is Nael's mother, although I have no way to confirm that:

Police say Nael threatened to run them over with his car and refused to comply with their orders after he had broken several traffic violations. The video of the incident, which was reviewed by the AP, shows an officer pointing a weapon at Nael as he accelerated his vehicle, followed by the gunshot.

The officer who fired the shot has been "detained on suspicion of manslaughter."
