I know it sounds like The Babylon Bee skit about Californians moving to Texas, but y'all... it seems A LOT of Californians want to move to greener pastures like Texas.
Nearly half of the folks there are thinking about it:
More than 40% of residents say they're contemplating moving out of California, with nearly half of them saying they're considering that "very seriously." About 61% pointed to the high cost of living here as the reason they'd go. People of color are far more likely to say that the expense of living in California is the reason they might leave. About 71% of residents who are either Black or Asian/Pacific Islander and considering relocating cited the cost of living.
The poll, conducted by a group of state nonprofits, also found that nearly a third of residents "said they might leave because the state's policies and laws don't align with their political views." California being possibly the most hard-blue state in the Union, you can guess what it is they're disagreeing with.
California is in crisis. Its population has been dropping for three straight years. Its great cities such as Los Angeles and San Francisco are descending into criminal chaos. Its taxes are too high and its government too contemptuous of the people it nominally serves.
The surprising thing isn't that 40% of people are thinking of leaving; it's that the number isn't higher.
But don't worry, folks in the know have figured out what's driving this great shift:
Some chalked this up to the barrage of stories from Fox News and other conservative media outlets that emphasize stories that criticize the state, its governor and his policies on issues ranging from homelessness to school closures during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ahh, yes, California, home to the largest percentage of Fox viewers in the entire country!
Yes, Californians: If you turn off Fox News, ignore the spiraling crime, step over the used needles on the sidewalk, and pay your outlandish tax bill without looking at it — everything will be fine!
