At least 10 cars of a freight train carrying hazardous material derailed in Whitemarsh Township north of Philadelphia around 5 a.m. Monday morning, prompting an evacuation notice for nearby residents.
It is unknown what hazardous material was being carried by the train at this time. No one was reported injured in the crash.
The train belongs to Norfolk Southern, which has had multiple derailments that have caught national attention this year alone, prompting an inquiry by Congress:
The derailments have highlighted the question of the integrity of the nation's transportation infrastructure, especially since 1,000 of these incidents occur in America each year, according to US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
