Brutal news out of India:
A train derailed leading to collisions with two other trains in the district of Balasore in the eastern state of Odisha on Friday night, said the state's chief secretary, Pradeep Jena. The crash injured at least 900 people.
The disaster was touched off by a Coromandel Express train derailing near the city of Balasore; a train traveling in the opposite direction subsequently hit several of those de-railed cars, while a nearby freight train was also struck.
At least 288 people are reported dead as of Saturday morning. Footage from the scene showed a chaotic jumble of train cars amid rescue workers and spectators:
"It's a tragic incident," Atul Karwal, the director of the National Disaster Response Force, told media. "The loss of lives is massive."
