Iowa Rep. Ashley Hinson proposes bill to boost the Child Tax Credit, apply it to preborn babies. Here's how much families could save.

This is a great example of the kind of basic, practical, meaningful pro-life work that Republicans can reasonably hope to get done in Congress:

Republicans are mounting their own effort at an expanded child tax credit that includes applying the credit to fetuses in the womb.

Rep. Ashley Hinson, R-Iowa, is leading a package of bills in the House called the Providing For Life Act, an ambitious attempt at overhauling the federal government's family care system.

Hinson told Fox News Digital her legislation "charts the policy course for a culture of life in America."

"Charts the policy course for a culture of life in America."

We can debate the wisdom of the Child Tax Credit in good faith. There are some strong arguments for simplifying the tax code and stripping away all of the trappings and complicated schematics that the IRS has built up over the past century (abolish the income tax!).

But if you're going to have a such a credit (and the business of a government should be promoting the growth and wealth of its citizenry for the future of the nation), it should apply to all children — unborn as well as born. It's fair, sensible, scientific. And best of all, it's pro-life!

Here are the details:

  • The Providing For Life Act includes 10 total bills that expand tax relief for families with children.
  • Families would see the credit expand from $2,000 to $4,500 for kids under the age of 6, and $3,500 for families with children ages 6 to 17.
  • Parents would be able to claim the credit retroactively for the previous year when they were pregnant.
  • The package would make the Adoption Tax Credit fully refundable, a value of $14,890 for adoptions finalized in 2022.

During the pandemic, families experienced higher child credits as a form of "relief" (the government considers it a favor to let you keep more of the money you earn), but moms and dads completing their 2022 taxes likely noticed a sharp rise in taxes as that policy rolled back, especially if they have many children.

Companion legislation, meanwhile, has been introduced in the Senate, with sponsor Sen. Marco Rubio arguing that the bills will "show America that conservatives are pro-life across the board."

Get it done, GOP. This one's easy.
