Early last week we lost actress Maggie Smith; closing out the week we saw the departure of yet another pop culture giant, Kris Kristofferson.

Kris Kristofferson, who attained success as both a groundbreaking country music singer-songwriter and a Hollywood film and TV star, died Saturday at home in Maui, Hawaii. No cause of death was given, but he was described as passing away peacefully while surrounded by family. He was 88.

The man really was a legend: He wrote some of the most enduring U.S. music staples, including "Me and Bobby McGee" and "Help Me Make It Through the Night." He was well-known to film audiences, meanwhile, for his roles in the "Blade" film trilogy as well as the 1976 remake of "A Star is Born."

The music world, meanwhile, mourned the loss of one of its legends:

RIP to one of the greats!
