Katherine Koonce, the headmaster at The Covenant School, lost her life protecting her students and staff members from a transgender former student who opened fire yesterday, killing six.

Nashville City Councilman Russ Pulley, a former FBI special agent, said that Koonce, 60, was quick to act and protected her children.

"It is my understanding from a witness at the school, that Katherine Koonce was on a Zoom call when she heard the first shot. She immediately ended the call, got up, and headed straight for the shooter," Pulley, a former FBI special agent, told Fox News.

"She did what principals and headmasters do; she protected her children. In addition, she prepared the school by seeking advanced level active shooter training and from witnesses at the scene, this protocol (details of which I cannot provide) saved countless lives."

Nashville Police Chief John Drake said Koonce was found dead in a hallway by herself. "There was a confrontation, I'm sure — you can tell the way she was lying in the hallway," Drake said.

It seems apparent that the active-shooter protocol implemented by Koonce was quickly followed once the killer started shooting, given the extreme locked-down state of the school visible in the police bodycam footage.

On top of that, Koonce was apparently one of those rare souls that advances toward impending danger in order to try and save others.

It appears that Katherine Koonce laid down her life for her students.
