Remember most of American history, when we knew the results of elections very quickly?
By 1860, the telegraph system was being installed and the Pony Express was up and running, so most elections were called by the day after the election.
Well, in 2024, I guess we have far less sophisticated equipment than they did 160 years ago. That's the only reason why it would take a full calendar week to determine how people marked their ballots...
Right?
The Nevada Independent has more on the specifics:
Nevada law allows all mail ballots postmarked by Election Day to be counted until 5 p.m. on Saturday, and mail ballots with an unclear or no postmark must be counted by Friday at 5 p.m. Those statutes were upheld this year despite multiple lawsuits from state and national Republicans.
Why did Nevada design it this way in the first place??
