A Chinese mom was traveling with her 4-year-old daughter from Haikou, Hainan, in southern China to meet her husband in Beijing last month, when she went into labor at only 25 weeks.

The baby girl was unexpectedly born in the bathroom of the airplane, and when flight attendants called for medical assistance a neonatal nurse from Hainan Provincial People's Hospital jumped into action to help the newborn. Two doctors from other departments in the same hospital were also on the flight and assisted in providing lifesaving care to the preemie.

The nurse, Chen Shanshan, said that she saw the mother holding the baby still in its fetal membrane. She removed the membrane and began trying to revive the baby, who was not breathing.

Shanshan said as she performed infant CPR,

This little weak life is in critical danger. Every single second is vital to her.

While the nurse worked to revive the infant, the flight attendants provided hot water bottles to keep the infant's temperature stable.

The plane made an emergency landing in Changsha where the mom and baby were transferred to a hospital. For 90 minutes, the nurse continued chest compressions on the infant, saying,

It was only as I saw the baby taken into the rescue room that I realised my arms were numb.

The baby's father rushed to the hospital where he was able to meet his wife and newborn baby. He later sent a video to the nurse thanking her, along with the doctors and flight attendants, for their lifesaving actions, saying,

Thank you for being there at the critical moment. We will tell our kid and she will remember you forever.

The baby girl, who was born weighing less than 2 lbs, is reportedly doing well, but will likely remain in the NICU for several months.
