NJ groundhog dies days before Groundhog Day ... so does this mean winter will never end?

I think we should just give up on having good years.

First 2020, then 2021, and now Milltown Mel dies in 2022 before he can tell us what to expect from the weather.

We just can't get a break.

"Milltown Mel," New Jersey's resident weather-predicting-groundhog celebrity (he had over 1,000 fans on Facebook, which definitely qualifies as celebrity status if you're a groundhog) died on Sunday, just 3 days before Groundhog Day.

It was a hard blow to the people of Milltown, and their Groundhog Day event had to be canceled. The "Milltown Mel" Facebook page announced the news, saying Mel left at a "tough time" and they weren't able to find a replacement:

I feel like that's just a bad omen for the year. Forget 6 more weeks of winter (which is what Punxsutawney Phil predicted), this must mean 6 years of bad luck or something.

Maybe it'll always be winter and never Christmas in Milltown!
