Just last week, after Mayra Flores was called Miss Frijoles and Jill Biden called Latinos breakfast tacos, I asked why Democrats keep comparing Hispanics to food.
And now The New York Times publishes an article suggesting that the time is now for cannibalism?
Move over Babylon Bee, there's a new prognosticator in town, and his name is me, Retrops.
To be fair, the tweet is more clickbait than a suggestion that our culture should embrace eating human beings, though that is not ruled out and is being promoted by some, but we'll get to that in a bit. The New York Times article covers a spate of books, shows, and movies that feature the gruesome act, including A Certain Hunger, Yellowjackets, Fresh, Lapvona, Tender is Flesh, and soon to be released Bones and All.
Apparently, most of these titles had been panned and unpublishable until the end of 2020, and then as food shortages started to become real, I guess, people started looking at their neighbor like mmmm....
Of course, cannibalism in the movies is nothing new, let's not forget old Hannibal Lecter and his fava beans.
Still, for the crowd that thinks the world is overpopulated, it's crazy to be putting these sorts of ideas into their heads.
Make no mistake, the hunger for these sorts of stories is increasingly part of the culture.
Chelsea G. Summers, author of A Certain Hunger, said she was horrified by the fact checkers for her book who helped her explain how to properly butcher and prepare her fictional characters. They had thought it through.
She went full vegan for a time after the experience.
In addition to just imagining the process, there are seriously some leftists out there calling for cannibalism as a means to fight climate change.
A Swedish scientist, Magnus Soderlund, suggested that by eating human meat we might be able to save the human race, if only the world would "awaken to the idea."
"Conservative taboos against cannibalism," he said, "can change over time if people simply tried eating human flesh."
He was hesitant to commit to being a cannibal himself and said that he would start with pets and bugs, but he also said,
I feel somewhat hesitant but to not appear overly conservative…I'd have to say… I'd be open to at least tasting it
Why does not eating people have to be a conservative thing?
Why can't abstaining from chowing down on another person be one of those universal, cross-the-aisle positions politicians are always promising?
Honestly, I've never been so motivated to fight for our cattle ranchers and farmers in my life.
The last thing I want is to wind up as a steak on AOC's plate, but if I do, I hope I give her indigestion.
