Russian President Vladimir Putin was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, his spokesperson said on Thursday. The nomination came from a group of Russian public figures and was spearheaded by Russian writer, Sergey Komkov, according to Russian news agency TASS.
The reason for the nomination has not yet been reported. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters that Putin's administration was not behind the nomination.
Sure...we believe you...
Adding intrigue to the story, the nomination comes after one of Putin's top critics, Alexei Navalny, was released from a German hospital following an alleged assassination attempt. French and Swedish labs have confirmed Navalny was poisoned with Novichok, a Soviet-era nerve agent which was also used in the suspected poisoning of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal.
Putin has claimed that Navalny might have poisoned himself, however, Navalny responded on his instagram to the claim:
"Good theory, I believe it deserves the most careful attention...Cooked Novichok in the kitchen. Took a sip from a flask on the plane. Fell into a coma"
Don't worry, it definitely wasn't Russia because Russian officials have stated they have seen no evidence of the poisoning. And we all know that the Russian government never lies.
