Regardless of where you land on the mask requirement debate, one thing is undeniable: Many major social media platforms are censoring dissenting opinions as quickly as possible. YouTube, Facebook and Twitter have all been very clear and open about their intent to remove what they deem as "wrong" opinions, even if they come from actual experts.
We can certainly discuss whether those platforms should be using their power in this way (oh, wait, no we can't because they keep deleting it!), but science and censorship aside, it is simply fascinating to see how great minds find ways around the various censorship algorithms!
Case in point: Meet Mr. Heckenlively, a science teacher who apparently moved to YouTube to continue educating his students after the quarantine hit. In a recent video, he decided to speak up about the prospect of forcing students to wear masks at school all day. However, knowing the watchful eye of YouTube censors are always on the lurk, he took a unique approach to communicating his message:
Brilliant! The only thing I love more than standing up for free speech is finding clever ways to do it!
Even if you disagree with his conclusions, the bottom line is that these conversations are vital. The solution to bad opinions is to discuss why they are bad, not just shut them down. When you silence dissent, you create martyrs, and martyrs create resistance. If you truly want to stop bad opinions from spreading, talk about why they are bad. And if you aren't able to do that effectively, maybe the opinion isn't actually that bad after all.
