Remember when college taught you useful skills?
I guess it was only a matter of time until we got to this point since Taylor Swift has an honorary PhD from New York University.
And since she's Doctor Taylor Swift now, I guess it's only reasonable that we recognize the lyrics of her pop songs as high literature.
That seems to be the reasoning coming out of Stanford University, which is offering swifties (Taylor Swift fans) a class called, "The Last Great American Songwriter: Storytelling with Taylor Swift through the Eras."
The name is a play on Swift's song "The Last Great American Dynasty" from her album, Folklore.
Ava Jeffs, the student who is teaching the class alongside Professor Mark McGurl, gave the following description:
The whole goal of the class is to dive into the art of songwriting, exploring the interplay between literary references and lyricism and storytelling in Taylor Swift's entire discography, taking it one album at a time and trying to look at the evolution of using songwriting as a narrative form.
It will draw parallels to classic works of literature and poetry in each album and gain a deeper understanding of the narrative power of music.
If the class is 3 credits, it will run just under $4,500 at Stanford's current tuition fees, and my guess is that every student taking it will one day demand the student loans they used to take it be forgiven.
It will also be graded as "satisfactory" or "non-satisfactory" and have no effect on students' GPA.
And that's a blessing.
I mean what swiftie would want their academic record to forever document how they bombed their Taylor Swift course in college??
Shout out to Not the Bee user @distractedknits for the heads up about this story.
