Is this the first sufferer of Trump Derangement Syndrome to land in jail?
It's so rare to see the justice system get the right guy when it comes to politics, so this story came as a surprise.
38-year-old Charles Littlejohn was just handed a five-year prison sentence for illegally leaking Donald Trump's tax records.
Investigators said he used his position as a contractor with the nation's tax collector to illegally obtain and then disperse the financial records of the former president, which resulted in 'numerous articles' based on the information.
Before sentencing Littlejohn on Monday, federal District Judge Ana Reyes called his conduct 'an attack on our constitutional democracy.'
'He targeted the sitting president of the United States of America, and that is exceptional by any measure,' Judge Reyes said. 'It cannot be open season on our elected officials.'
Look at this dweeb who thought he was saving dEmoCraCy by leaking POTUS's tax returns.
The judge was even a Biden appointee in Washington D.C. ... Even she saw how insane this crime was.
Littlejohn pled guilty for the crime and took personal responsibility, saying he knew what the consequences were when he first set out to "Get Trump." I guess he thinks he's some sort of a martyr.
Prosecutors and the judge both saw Littlejohn's crime as an illegal attempt to influence to 2020 election, since the leak occurred during Trump's reelection bid.
And, heck, I guess it might have worked. This seems like more than a 5 years in the clink crime to me.
Prosecutors wrote in their sentencing memo this month that Littlejohn โ who had previously worked at the IRS contracting company โ returned to a position working with the IRS 'with the hope and expectation' of gaining access to Trump's tax records. They alleged he 'exploited a loophole' in the computing system to upload the stolen data to a private website and then stored the information on a personal device before leaking Trump's tax returns to an unnamed news organization six months later.
Littlejohn shopped his illegal information out to The New York Times and ProPublica, which were both happy to publish the info.
I don't see those news outlets going on trial for this any time soon.
'He executed his disclosure scheme over the course of multiple years, plotting and calculating carefully at each step to minimize the risk of detection and maximize the impact of his disclosures,' the Justice Department wrote. 'Indeed, he reorganized his entire life around this crime.'
The judge handed down the maximum sentence she could, given the fact that the defendant agreed to plead guilty in a deal with the DOJ.
Florida's Rick Scott criticized the "sweetheart" plea deal on behalf of the Florida citizen Donald Trump, but the judge interrupted the reading of Scott's appeal, deeming it too political.
With the guilty verdict and a judge willing to do her job, Littlejohn will be in prison for 5 years because of his TDS.
