It's sooo weird how this keeps happening, like, over and over and over again:
The rapidly expanding BQ and XBB omicron subvariants are "barely susceptible to neutralization" from the COVID-19 vaccines, including the updated booster shot, according to a new study.
BQ.1, BQ.1.1, XBB and XBB.1 are the "most resistant SARS-CoV-2 variants to date," according to the study, which was published in the journal Cell this week. The subvariants were responsible for nearly 73% of new COVID-19 infections last week, according to estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. ...
"Together, our findings indicate that BQ and XBB subvariants present serious threats to current COVID-19 vaccines, render inactive all authorized antibodies, and may have gained dominance in the population because of their advantage in evading antibodies," the authors wrote.
Vaccine fans right now:
Sorry! You can't argue with scientists, not unless you want to be "anti-science" yourself.
Meanwhile, something tells me we're in for another round of boosters:
The updated shots are designed to take on omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.5 as well as the original coronavirus strain. But those subvariants are declining in the U.S., while BQ.1.1, BQ.1 and XBB are on the rise.
