Two families are suing Universal Studios for $30K after the character "Gru" made the OK gesture in photos with their young biracial children. According to WKMG, "Both families are claiming the girls suffered mental anguish, loss of dignity, humiliation, embarrassment and other emotional distress due to the incidents."
According to the ADL (The Anti-Defamation League), the hand gesture can sometimes be used as "a sincere expression of white supremacy." But according to ASL(American Sign Language), it can also be the number 9. And according to the AOA (Average Old American), it also means "Okay!"
To be totally fair, the symbol was flashed by Gru, who is a known villain, so honestly, can we really put it past him to flash White Supremacist symbols? I think not. And I think we can all agree that the true fault here lies with the parents for exposing their children to despicable characters - that's just asking for some mental anguish.
