And just like that, another Babylon Bee prophecy has been fulfilled!
Christian high schoolers at Faith Lutheran Middle School & High School gather for their weekly "Tuesdays with Taylor β the Eras Bible Study," where they incorporate and connect Taylor Swift lyrics into their Bible study. π
We've heard of University courses studying Swift lyrics, but this fandom madness has reached a new level.
Many of us may think Swift is singing about her failed relationships and ex-boyfriends, but these students may be onto something much bigger than that...
(Probably not, though)
In the song "Miss Americana & the Heartbreak Prince" from Taylor Swift's 2019 album "Lover," these students stumbled upon what they believe is a biblical moment.
"I'll never let you go, 'cause I know this is a fight that someday we're going to win," she sings.
Apparently, these profound words had the students diving into Deuteronomy 20:3-4 for deeper meaning: "Do not be afraid as you go out to fight your enemies today! Do not lose heart or panic or tremble before them. For the Lord your God is going with you! He will fight for you against your enemies, and he will give you victory!"
Bible group member Michael Vardanyan explained to KCTV how connecting the singer's lyrics to Bible verses brings them "peace" (which is a Swift song). π
We take Taylor Swift song lyrics and we connect them to Bible [verses] and then we just talk about how they connect. And so, I really like this club because we get connections, we get βPeace,' and we get common likings.
According to The Washington Times, CEO Steven Buuck, Faith Lutheran has a student body of 2,100 (with both middle and high school levels) and is the largest Lutheran school in the United States, as well as the largest non-public school in Nevada.
Faith Lutheran, along with its sponsor, Faith Community Lutheran Church, shares affiliation with the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod branch.
Buuck told The Washington Times he's happy just to have the kids excited about learning the Bible - even if it means idolizing a pop singer, I suppose.
Anytime we can make the Bible relevant β and even if it's just the content of the lyrics that draws them the Bible study β and then they dive into God's word, it's connected to God's Word. To me, it hits our mission statement: βEveryone prepared! Everyone saved!'
...
We have 60% of our students are essentially unchurched. [Of those] 32% literally don't go to church and 32% of our students say they go once or twice a year. So, anytime we can get kids beyond chapel, beyond their theology class, to come on Tuesday mornings and dive into God's word because Taylor Swiftβs lyrics got them to come, to me it's just such a beautiful win-win.
Here we are, folks. Comparing Taylor Swift songs to Bible verses. Soon, kids will be asking, "What would Taylor Swift do?"
