Well, this isn't a great look for Vienna (MO) Police Chief Shannon Thompson, as it seems his cigarette started a fire at Vienna Point Residential Facility back in August.

So apparently an accidental 911 call from the mental health facility was placed close to midnight on August 6, which led officers there. Upon arrival, Chief Thompson, seemingly a frugal man, left a half-smoked cigarette burning in a planter for later. You see him come back for a drag after a few minutes and then stomp it out.
Well, it wasn't completely out, and a full 90 minutes later the planter lit up like a Christmas tree, eventually starting the building on fire.
The fire crew had a tough time putting out the fire, as they were dealing with water supply issues and fighting high winds. Also, they first had to make some rescues. Fortunately, everyone made it out safely.
I gotta give you this from Chief Thompson via the local ABC affiliate:
After reviewing video footage in October, investigators asked Thompson why he never mentioned the cigarette.
Thompson told officials it never occurred to him that it was possible his actions could have resulted in the fire.
What's more, Chief Thompson was apparently on the scene of the fire while the investigation was underway.
The fire remains under investigation and officials are deciding whether or not to file charges. At publishing time Chief Thompson was still on staff.
