For her 80th birthday, Sue Westerfield of Cullman, Alabama received a birthday gift that will be tough to top. The chance to jump out of an airplane.
Sue had joked in the past about maybe one day going skydiving, but she wasn't sure if she really wanted to do it. But her daughter took her seriously.
"[St. Paul's Lutheran Church] had an auction, and one of the items was a package from Skydive," Westerfield said. "My daughter was sitting behind me, and I didn't know it and she bought the package."
So, last Saturday, Grandma Sue went to the airport, signed her waivers, and prepared for the jump. By the time she was in position to jump, Sue didn't feel nervous at all.
"I was still trying to get into position and I'm out," Westerfield said. "And it happened so quick, which I am so thankful for."
The 80-year-old woman upon landing had a big smile on her face, and said that the jump was "very very good!" When asked by the TV reporter if she ever thought she'd be this cool at 80, Sue replied, "No! No, no. I'm thankful and blessed to be here at 80 [and] really be able to move and get around, have fun, and enjoy life. I'm very blessed."
Mrs. Westerfield is, indeed, truly blessed and her adventurous spirit has blessed her family and those of us who get to enjoy her story.
