So this just happened early Tuesday afternoon:
Not the Bee doesn't report on every political appointment, only the funny ones, and boy did we have a fun time covering Gay Mayor Pete, who got the job of managing government oversight of transportation logistics in the most wealthy nation in human history because he is gay and likes trains.
(Did I mention that he's gay?)
Not the Bee covered Pete's nomination for transportation secretary, and then quickly realized that he was a gold mine for stories that are too crazy for satire.
So as a final ode to Pete before he runs for Michigan governor, I thought we should see how his replacement stacks up.
The US Senate overwhelmingly confirmed ex-Wisconsin Rep. Sean Duffy as President Trump's transportation secretary Tuesday, adding another former Fox News personality to the cabinet.
Duffy, 53, cleared the upper chamber in a 77-22 vote after his nomination received the approval of all 28 members of the Senate Commerce Committee.
Duffy is an interesting character. He first made a name for himself on the 1997 season of MTV's reality show, "The Real World." He met his wife, current Fox News host Rachel Campos-Duffy, on a second season in 1998.
In addition to moonlighting as a reality TV star, Duffy got a J.D. degree from William Mitchell College of Law, and was appointed as the district attorney of Ashland County, Wisconsin, by then-Governor Scott McCallum.
He then ran for Congress and served from 2010 to 2019, stepping down when his NINTH child, a girl, was born with a heart defect. His time in office was spent on the House Committee on Financial Services and several subcommittees. He has also been a big supporter of Trump's push for tariffs.
Even the Dems seem to like him.
'Sean is the right person for this job,' Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), a member of the panel, said of Trump's nom, pointing to the ex-congressman's success in whipping up bipartisan support for federal funding of the St. Croix Crossing, a bridge between Wisconsin and Minnesota.
Duffy will now be in charge of the Transportation Department's more than 55,000 employees and oversee the nation's rail, transit and other infrastructure, with a budget of roughly $110 billion available to him.
Duffy has pledged to focus on rail safety, drawing particular attention to the derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, that Mayor Pete loved to ignore. He's also pledged to make his first trip as secretary to areas of Appalachia that were devastated by Hurricane Helene.
As for other differences between Mayor Pete (who is gay) and Duffy: Well, here he is praying with his family before being confirmed:
(Yeah, you Catholics got another guy in the government)
What an upgrade from this, eh? ๐
