They think they're stopping Hitler or ... something?

The state of Illinois sued the Trump administration Monday in an attempt to block its 'unlawful' deployment of federalized National Guard troops to Chicago.

That's right! Why would federal agents in Chicago need help from the military, anyway??

Oh.

The move follows plans to mobilize 300 Illinois National Guard troops, as well as the mobilization of 400 Texas National Guardsmen offered by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. The troops are being deployed to protect federal agents involved in arresting illegal aliens, as well as busting up drug/human trafficking rings.

Notice that Secretary of War Pete Hegseth's memo specifically mentions protecting federal officers and property from violent protests:

More from CNN:

'Defendants' deployment of federalized troops to Illinois is patently unlawful,' the lawsuit says. 'Plaintiffs ask this court to halt the illegal, dangerous, and unconstitutional federalization of members of the National Guard of the United States, including both the Illinois and Texas National Guard.'

If Illinois and Chicago officials don't want to provide justification for Trump's use of the National Guard, why is the Chicago PD being told to hang Homeland Security agents out to dry?

Beyond simply ignoring the violence, Chicago's mayor has also set up "ICE Free" zones to actively thwart federal officers from arresting criminals...
