Mass deportations have already begun, but for some reason, not all the countries that have been shipping their worst criminals to the U.S. want them back.
Some of these countries are financially dependent on the U.S., which allows Trump to finagle a deal. However, what about countries like Venezuela where the threat of tariffs isn't going to work?
Well, he's got that covered too.
The Trump administration is reportedly putting its "Safe Third Country" agreement back together with El Salvador. He called based President Bukele just two days after being in office to talk about
working together to stop illegal immigration and crack down on transnational gangs like Tren de Aragua.
The agreement had been made in 2020, but with Covid and then Biden, it was never implemented. It works like this:
The arrangement, known as a ‘Safe Third Country' agreement, would empower U.S. immigration officials to deport non-Salvadoran migrants to El Salvador, blocking them from requesting asylum in the U.S. Instead, migrants would be deported with instructions to seek asylum in El Salvador, which would be designated a ‘safe third country.'
When you think about it, this is an amazing solution.
Under President Nayib Bukele's care, if the illegal immigrants are just normal family types trying to escape violence and authoritarianism in their home countries, they'll find it in what is now a peaceful, lovely El Salvador.
On the other hand, if they're criminals, terrorists, and gang members, they'll be sent to one of El Salvador's infamous prisons, never to be seen again.
