On Friday, this year's Nobel Peace Prize was awarded.
Guess who DIDN'T win?
The Nobel Committee gave the award to Maria Corina Machado, the Venezuelan politician who beat socialist dictator Nicholas Maduro in the 2024 presidential election, but was not allowed to take office by said dictator.
As it turns out, Maduro losing by more than 30 points didn't matter because he has a military, a disarmed population, and broad leftwing statements about the "will of the people."
Applications for the award closed on January 31, 2025, meaning this week's peace deal in Gaza that was negotiated by Trump's State Department weren't considered.
However, Trump has been nominated multiple times for the Nobel Peace for other historic peace deals, including the Abraham Accords during his first term. Because of this, a reporter asked the Nobel Committee chair about his thoughts regarding Trump.
The chair's answer was ... interesting?
"This committee sits in a room filled with the portraits of all laureates, and that room is filled with both courage and integrity."
Did he connect this idea to the excuse that they get thousands of applications because he wants us to know the committee takes all applications seriously ... or because he's implying that he doesn't want Trump's mug to be included with people who have "courage and integrity?" 🤔
Meanwhile, the chair said Maria Corina Machado was an "extraordinary example of civilian courage," which is confusing, because Alfred Nobel didn't have a "civilian courage" category. Instead, he wanted the award to go to someone who has "done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses."
Many people are confused about what the award means these days.
Machado, for her part, actually dedicated her award to Trump!
