A month from now, this will be the only moment of the debate that voters remember:
It's never fun to see a professional debate turn into whatever that was (the condescending "schoolteacher" tone of the moderators when talking about the mics being cut?), but it was important that the American people got that context from JD Vance.
The moderators claimed that the Haitians in Springfield, Ohio, are here "legally" because they have "temporary protected status" (TPS). This status shields foreigners from removal from the U.S. if they have fear of returning home due to widespread unrest or natural disaster. The Biden admin has used this to fly in hundreds of thousands of foreigners using U.S. tax dollars.
Since the TPS program was established in the '90s, it's been abused to allow foreigners with this temporary status to apply for long-term residency - but the president and his three-letter agencies do not have the authority to keep them here. Only Congress has the ability to write law.
Because of this, these Haitian migrants in Ohio are not here legally. Biden-Harris are only allowed to use certain temporary executive powers that can circumvent the law (again, temporarily).
In recent years, the Supreme Court ruled on Congress's authority in this matter, as seen in this video (if you're interested in more info):
Vance was right to call out the moderators for fact-checking him when he was right to say that the TPS does not constitute legal admitted status ... and that dumping TENS OF THOUSANDS OF THEM IN SMALL TOWNS is devastating and unjust to the Americans who live there. π
